Charles H. Townes Center for Science

The Physics Department will be one of many lucky beneficiaries when the Charles H. Townes Center for Science opens in 2008. The center is named for Furman Physics Graduate and Nobel Prize winner Charles H. Townes, the inventor of the laser.

The building will provide new lab and research facilities as well as a Nuclear Lab, Optics Lab, and a Planetarium Simulation Lab. In addition, common areas in the center will encourage collaboration between the physics department and the other scientific disciplines at Furman. The building’s close proximity to Riley Hall will allow for joint efforts with the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Phase one of the two-phase building project will create new space for the department in the north hall of the center. The second cycle of construction will add a science library and additional classroom and laboratory space for all departments.
